Damen Launches Road Ferry 6819 E3 At Damen Shipyards Galati 1

The Amherst Islander II which is a Damen Road Ferry 6819 E3 was launched on the 14th of November at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. The representatives of the owner, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario, Canada and the personnels from Damen attended the ceremony.

The Amherst Islander II is a part of the two-vessel order that Damen is to deliver to the Ministry of Transportation Ontario.

The E3 ferries will be North America’s first passenger/car ferries that will be fully powered by electricity and they will also bring down the level of emissions by about 7 million kg of CO2 every year.

The Amherst Islander II which is the smaller of the two has a length of about 72 metres and a loading capacity of around 42 cars.The Damen Road Ferry 9819 E3, the Wolfe Islander IV 99 metres in length and larger. Presently, it under construction in the dry docks and is scheduled to be launched in mid 2020.

Damen sales manager Leo Postma said, “Successfully achieving this important milestone in a complex project like this can only be achieved in close cooperation between the client and the shipyard. We are truly proud to be working on these future-proof vessels, and are eagerly looking forward to seeing this vessel arrive in Ontario, Canada.”

The ferries will operate only on Lake Ontario between Amherst and Wolfe Island.
