ISWAN Announces Mental Health Awareness Training For The Maritime Industry 1

A new training course offered by ISWAN will provide management-level personnel on shore and on board ships with an introduction to mental health awareness. The one-day course, provided by the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), is also suitable for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of mental health at sea and how to support crew, including seafarers and those who support them.

Delegates can expect to gain a better knowledge and understanding of mental health and build the skills and confidence needed to recognise the signs of mental health problems and respond to concerns.

There is an increasing awareness in the maritime industry of mental health and the impact of the unique challenges faced by seafarers. Recent guidelines issued to shipping companies highlight the importance of mental health awareness and encourage training in recognising signs and managing supportive conversations.

ISWAN’s training is designed specifically to address mental health at sea – it adapts best practice for mental health awareness, early recognition and response for a seafaring context. The training is designed by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and is grounded in evidence and best practice in the field of mental health.

ISWAN has previously published a series of Good Mental Health Guides for Seafarers and worked with KVH Videotel on a free training package for crew entitled Seafarers’ Mental Health and Wellbeing. This new training course aims to help companies do their part for seafarers’ mental health, drawing on the extensive experience of ISWAN and ISWAN’s SeafarerHelp around the issues affecting seafarers and the challenges of supporting people at sea.
