NYK Becomes The First Asian Member Of One Sea Autonomous Ship Alliance

NYK Group research subsidiary MTI Co. Ltd. has become the first Asian member of One Sea, which is an industry alliance that aims to realize autonomous ships. The NYK Group aims to realize ”manned autonomous ships” that further improve safety by its active participating in the discussion on international standards.

One Sea is an international was launched in Finland alliance that leads the world in the field of autonomous ships. In 2016 the work began with the aim of creating an environment suitable for autonomous ships by 2025 through discussion and the development of a roadmap, international rules, and technology standards. The alliance now comprises of nine corporate members, which includes big European manufacturers leading autonomous ship technology development.

In its pursuit of safer operations and a reduction in crew workloads, the NYK Group has been conducting research and development, and demonstration projects on ship automation. Participating in One Sea enhances these initiatives and boosts the eventual realization of NYK’s aim of manned autonomous ships that will make use of advanced technologies to support ship operation and enhance safety.

In accordance with its medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green,” the NYK Group will continue to proactively promote digitalization in the pursuit of safe operation and new value.
