Princess Cruise Lines Has Been Fined $20m By US For Breaking Pollution Laws
A fine of USD20 million has been imposed on Princess Cruise Lines and its owner Carnival Cruise Lines by a Florida court. The fine is imposed because it broke pollution laws. The latest fine is imposed for violation of Carnival’s probation which followed an earlier fine where it was ordered to pay USD40 million for pollution conviction in 2017 and asked to serve a five-year term of probation for deliberately dumping oil-contaminated waste and then covered this up intentionally.
All Carnival cruise vessels trading in US ports have been required to obey the court orders which states that all trading vessels should be a court-approved and -supervised environmental compliance plan, during its probation period. However, auditors have identified numerous violations of the plan, including “major non-conformities”.

Carnival also pleaded guilty to six violations of probation, that included two cases. These two cases were, where it sent in teams to prepare for independent inspections to avoid adverse findings which were described by the court as a “deliberate deception undermined the court’s supervision of probation”.
It violated other laws which included deliberately falsifying environmental training records on two cruise ships, and it also discharged plastic in Bahamian waters and failed to record accurately the illegal discharges it made. It is also found by the auditors that discharge and disposal of plastic and non-food garbage from waste thrown overboard is failed to be separated by many of the company’s cruise. The company will also remain on probation for three years.
