SHI Receives First AIP For DNV GL’s Cyber Secure (Advanced+) Notation

Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (SHI) was awarded the Approval in Principle (AIP) by DNV GL for the Cyber Secure (Advanced+) notation. This was the first AIP of the world that is for the Advanced+ addition of DNV GL to the Cyber Secure notation. Due to the usage of the Samsung Smart Ship Solution, SVESSEL® the additional award was presented.

Cybersecurity has become an important part of the safety of ship design and operations. The importance of this will most probably increase as the connected systems onboard continues to proliferate which the industry keeps moving forward to smarter and automatic ships.

Thus, making it necessary for the shipping industry to make the security against cyber attacks stronger and prepare for the next generation solutions for security.

“We are glad to receive the world’s first AIP from DNV GL for the Cyber Secure (Advanced+) notation including SVESSEL®,” said Hae Ki Jang, Vice President, SHI Shipbuilding & Drilling Sales Engineering Team. “We expect our cybersecurity technology, verified by DNV GL, will meet the customer’s requirements on cyber risks, which are a growing concern in the marine industry. Through this achievement, SHI can lead the next generation smart ship design enhanced with cybersecurity technology. We are sure that this certified design of cybersecurity will become more and more value for customers.”

“We are pleased to receive the AIP on SVESSEL® with the highest level of cybersecurity standards from DNV GL,” said Dr. Hyun Joe Kim, Director, SHI Ship and Offshore Performance Research Center. “It will make systems safer in terms of securing assets and data, which is an essential technology as the industry move towards autonomous shipping. We expect close collaborations with DNV GL, with further work on the required tests evaluating the cybersecurity performance of actual designs.”
