Two Massive Shipwrecks As Big As The Vasa Ship Discovered Outside Vaxholm

Divers have found out two 17th century huge warships outside Vaxholm which is an island near Stockholm. The archaeologist divers that are from the new museum Vrak-Museum of Wrecks are estimating that these might be the sister ships of Vasa.

The archaeologists of maritime at Vrak-Museum of Wrecks which is a new part of the National Maritime and Transport Museums of Sweden have investigated the remains at the bottom of the sea, outside of Vaxholm.

The findings of the investigation were surprising. A shipwreck that is large like the Vasa ship has been recovered. It was a 17th-century warship that was probably sunk purposely so that it was difficult for the intruders to take the sea route to Stockholm.

Although the stern is broken, the bow has been preserved better which stands about 5 meters away from the bottom of the sea. The measurements and the details that have been noted seem similar to that of the Vasa.

“It was like swimming around the Vasa ship,” says maritime archaeologist Jim Hansson enthusiastically.

Another shipwreck was discovered by the team the next day which is possibly bigger in terms of length than the first wreck that was found.

The maritime archaeologists are estimating that the second wreck is that of the Apple, Vasa’s sister ship. According to the historical sources, these were some of the many warships that were sunk outside Vaxholm in the 17th century.

The archaeologists have picked up wood samples from the wrecks so as to analyze the date and thereby identify the wrecks.

“The detective work has only just begun,” Hansson says.

The National Maritime and Transport Museums carried out these dives in cooperation with the Swedish Navy.
