To help support the trade across the Pacific and Caribbean and for the development of the sustainable economies of marine, a five-day-long capacity development conference will be launched by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

The government experts from the sectors of maritime safety, seabed mapping and ocean science will lead the conference. By the development of legislation and regulations that help in the secure usage of oceans, it will help the representatives to achieve the goals.

Legislation and regulations that help to share the information of marine which included the up to date bathymetry (seabed mapping data), tides, navigational warnings and observations are necessary for the ships to navigate safely, safeguard the lives of the mariner and bring down the likeliness of groundings that can harm the environment of the marine.

This information when taken together with the detailed analysis of marine life can also support the nations for the development of policies that are based on evidence and legislation that helps in the sustainable usage of natural resources.

The main focus of the session that will be led by UKHO will focus on how the regulations and laws of the maritime can provide support for the establishment of sustainable ‘blue’ economies in the islands and also help to provide secure navigation of the vessels that move in their regions.

The partners the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and ATKINS will talk about how the ocean science programs will be supported by the rules and also how the different areas of ocean policy are supported by the present legislation.

Commenting on the conference, Ian Davies, Hydrographic Programme Manager at the UKHO said, “This seminar has been a fantastic opportunity to work with partners from UK Government and around the world to help build sustainable and resilient marine economies for the future. The oceans are vital for providing these states with food, security, and livelihoods, so it’s vital that we not only help them understand and monitor these areas but also learn how to protect them through the development of strong governance and appropriate legislation.”

This will be a part of the Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office will coordinate it and the National Security Committee’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) will fund it. The aim of this program is to support the Commonwealth Small Island Developing States for the creation of marine economies that are sustainable and resilient. The collection of marine geospatial data in more than 6500km2 of the ocean has been led by UKHO by this program. This is done in order to help these nations support the cause of secure trade, overcoming the impact of climate change and the development of sustainable marine economies.
