The Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) shipping industry’s voluntary body for promoting and developing the shipping sector’s education, training, and skills. It is a part of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the trade association for the UK shipping industry.

MNTB is located in the UK is known for its commendable marine training services. The MNTB works in close association with the various government departments involved with the shipping, as well as nautical educational organizations, institutes, seafarer trade unions, and industry organizations involved in merchant navy education and training.

Brief History of MNTB

In 1935, it was founded as the Central Board for the Training of Officers in the Merchant Service and was reconstituted in 1942. Thus, the MNTB is the authoritative center of proficiency and information on seafarer education and training at sea and has lead to contribute a sea change in the development and delivery of seafarer training since its inception in 1935.

Courses’ Model Offered by MNTB

The MNTB is responsible for setting and approving the framework of the programs for new entrants into the Merchant Navy, at rating and officer levels in the United Kingdom.

▪︎ A Higher National Diploma course

▪︎A Foundation Course incorporating the Scottish Professional Diploma (SPD).

The MNTB does not provide merchant navy training directly by itself. It offers distinct learning models that are widely incorporated by institutes across the world catering to the merchant navy aspirants.
